Question about English (US)

"How come you don't keep an umbrella in your locker, you know, to keep your books company."
For what it's worth, the "you" always leaves books at school. Does this sentence make sense? Or do you think it'd make more sense if it was "How come you don't keep an umbrella in your locker, you know, it'd keep your books company."
