Question about Japan

I am trying to learn Japanese. Am I correct in thinking that there is a far bigger gap between 1) reading / writing Japanese and 2) speaking / understanding spoken Japanese, than with European languages.
What I mean to say is that with French for example, if you can speak and listen ok, you are largely there with reading and writing. With Japanese you could speak and understand well, but still be completely lost with reading and writing.... Is that a fair thought coming from a native english speaker?
