It's not rude, not particularly polite either though. If you do want to sound more polite, you could say either:
- "An explanation with pictures would be preferable"
or
- "I'd prefer an explanation with pictures"
You can add "please", or "if you don't mind" to the end of these to sound more polite.

= I would appreciate explanations with pictures.
An explanation with pictures would be preferable.
= I would prefer an explanation with pictures.
It is more polite to refer to yourself indirectly here.

Explanations with pictures would be appreciated.
= I would appreciate explanations with pictures.
The second one says "I 〜" which some people prefer to omit.
