Question about English (US)

There is an annual event called 除夜の鐘 Joya no kane in Japan.
We ring big bells 108 times in temples on the last day of the year.
It's said that we have 108 polluting thoughts such as greed, hatred and etc and 108 times ringing bells could remove them.

These days, some people make complains that the sound of the bell is annoying.
It means the event is effective. The people probably are filled with the bad thoughts.
Does this sound natural?
