Question about English (UK)
My textbook says “They are of better quality than competing products.” And I was confused by “of better quality”. Why isn’t it just “Their quality of products are better than competing ones.” which makes more sense to me?
Also, I’d appreciate it if you could give me some examples of this kind of “of”.:D

@learning257 “of better quality” is a posh way of saying they are better, it sounds more official and is generally used a lot on packaging and labels. It is almost never used in speech unless you’re very very posh.

I’m english, we don’t repeat words very much, so we have variations like this.
Of better quality just means that they are better.
They both make perfect sense.

@learning257
Of better quality
There are many little descriptive clauses which can be inserted for tonal variation
He is known to us
instead of, We know him
They are of a piece
rather than, They are similar
and so on

@learning257 It’s basically just a more complicated way of saying it. Both are correct, however we don’t really say stuff like this in public.
English like this is mainly used when writing, or talking formally.

It's more formal. In spoken English, I would rarely use descriptive clauses (examples listed in response from @thetrees).
They're good to understand but you can get away with not using them.
