Nation is used more formally than country. But one nuance, is that a nation isn't thought of having borders. A nation kind of refers to the people as well as the country. While country can have a nuance of talking about the land itself.
"This great nation of ours is going through turmoil/trouble"
"This country's exports are mostly fish and various crops."
By the way, multiracial is the same no matter the phrase, so I just focused on the words country/nation.
