Is the "ch" and "h" sound always the same?
If so, why is there a need to put a "c" in front? Is it just a historical accident? Does anyone know how this came about?

Polish used to have two "h" sounds. The sound written with "ch" was a bit guttural. Nowadays the pronunciation is identical.

Once "h" was like voiced "ch" ("gh") but nowadays people don't distinguish the 2 sounds and we pronounce both of them like "ch" ("kh")
