I was I who gave her the gift.

The first one is the grammatically correct way to say it, but most people now prefer the second one because the first way sounds very dramatic or old-fashioned.

The first one would be grammatically correct if it was "It was I who gave her the gift", but the second one sounds way more natural and should be used.
