Question about English (US)
This is from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The underlined part seems to me so random that I honestly don't get it. Could anyone explain it to me?

I could have done without pickles on my burger. But I was starving, and that's the only way they serve them. (I don't like pickles. I could do without them.)
I could do without your constant moaning. (I don't like or need to hear you whining all the time)
I could have done without the fake pleasantries. (Everyone is so fake. We know we're being fake. I'll be just fine without you asking whether I got that promotion or not.)
Our trip was excellent. But we could have done without the guided tour. It was a massive waste of money. (It would have been best to save money without doing the guided tour. It was a waste of time and money)
Hope that helps. Let me know I should clarify more.

@geesehonk Sorry, I was/am really tired and didn't fully explain. I edited my above comment to have some explanations.
It's not necessarily sarcasm, although you could use the phrase sarcastically.
He's saying that he doesn't like long fingernails. They gross him out. They give him a shiver down his spine. He didn't need to hear that part.

With proper "kid intonation," he COULD say that line sarcastically. Just FYI. Guess it's up to you as the reader :)
