A "conspiracy theorist" is regarding as a bit abnormal. Such people remind me of paranoid people. They never accept anything at face value (which means they don't think things are really what they seem to be). Instead they think there are nefarious forces, evil people, who are working behind the scenes (which means "out of view") to accomplish some goal.
For example, in America there was a terrible school shooting in the town, "Sandy Hook" in which a young man shot and killed very young children. Afterwards there were several conspiracy theories, such as the killer was not acting alone. Or that the shootings never even happened. In the last case, the idea was that the event was staged (like a movie) to win political support for additional gun restrictions, but that no young children were actually killed. There were a number of lawsuits filed against the people spreading this conspiracy theory which caused great pain to those families whose children were killed.
