배우다 = learn something.
배우지 = learning something.
for example,
A : What do you learning at academy?
A : 너 학원에서 뭘 배우고 있어?
B : I'm learning geology!
B : 나 지질학 배우지!
The origin of 배우다 is "배다"(permeate)
and 배다(새끼를)(pregnant, have an egg inside=bloom for fruit)
