Question about Spanish (Mexico)

How do they pick the grammatical gender of a new word? For example, "Sprite" hasn't always existed, yet it is masculine, why is that?

My guess is that new words are always masculine, am I correct?

(Sorry I couldn't ask this in Spanish)
