Crouch is used more often but they both mean the same thing

They technically mean the same the same thing, but “hunker” is a pretty uncommon word. I don’t think I’ve ever said it outside of the phrase “hunker down”, which means to brace oneself.
Some native english speakers might not even know what it means.
I would recommend sticking with “crouch”, or possibly using “squat”.
