Question about English (US)

"Our luck had to run out sooner or later."

I came across this sentence.

This "had to (past tense)" and "sooner or later" in the sentence....
Is this correct to write? Does it sound natural to say?

The phrase 'sooner or later' is usually used in a future tense sentence, right? Not a past tense one.
What do you think of the sentence?
