ahh sorry, i misunderstood the question. "lean right" is more commonly used, because "lean to the right" sounds more like they're physically leaning to their right.

It's about politics, some celebrities are more conservative (right) and some are more liberal (left)
Correct me if I'm wrong about which one is left or right I'm not 100% sure lol

this is referring to political parties. left is democratic, and right is republican.
