Question about English (US)

This is from a twitter.

Best line in this week's TWD: "I didn't ask for much and got more than I deserved."
Story of my life, man.

I got a negative impression from the sentence because it ends with "Story of my life." So I presumed that I could reframe it as follows. " I thought something bad would happen to me, but it turned out to be bigger than that of what I expected. Am I correct?

If I'm right about it, I assume that ,without "Story of my life", the sentence would have affirmative aspect, which can be said " I thought something good would happen to me and it was bigger than my expectation." Am I correct?
Or am I totally mislead in understanding the sentence?
