yes "or" means "gold" in french, "ou" in french means "or" in english, but there is an other meaning for this word, "or" is also a word which is used to make a transition between two ideas in your essays, you can translate this word by "but" in english
for example :
"La cliente a commandé une jupe, or elle a reçu une robe."
= "The customer ordered a skirt, but she received a dress."

"or" has two meanings in french : the first meaning of "or" is gold . The second meaning is however ,in this case "or" is a conjunction and introduce a new information in a sentence. "Il n'est pas venu, or il avait dit qu'il viendrait."
