1 للسؤال, for asking

ستأخذ هذا أم ذاك, / هذا أم هذا
You will take this or that?
Sa_ta'_خoth haa_tha am thaak

أأكلتَ من هذا أم ذاك؟
You ate from this or that
A_akal_ta men haa_tha am thaak

Sometime you ask  just to remind about something

هل سنتناول الطعام أم ننتظره حتى يبرد !
Are we having the food or waiting for it to be cold!

2 When you want to imply that the result will be the same, Like we say in Levantine dialect
لا تّعب حالك Don't trouble yourself
Laat taعéb حaa_lak

the first one (aw) , you show the options, choose what ever you want.. Not a problem
But the second, you are asking what do you want normal food or healthy food.. You need answer

So am, for asking to select, or to say some things are the same
As for aw, to show the options, or there's something you don't sure about it
