Question about English (US)

What is the difference between developed countriesand rich countries?Feel free to just provide example sentences.

On news articles, I would often see "developed countries," but recently I see "rich countries" instead. Why do they avoid using "developed countries (and developing countries)"? Is it politically incorrect?
