Question about Italian

what does vigilante mean is it the equivalent of the english word vigilante.

do italian folk also use it virtually in the same manner as we americans.

we usually use it to mean someone who illegaly punishes other criminals and tries to prevent crime usually because they think the police aren't doing this effectively.

feel free to provide some examples if you want thanks again beforehand.
