Question about English (UK)

1) if we speak about a carriage/coach - a vehicle with wheels that is pulled by a horse, used in the past,
is it correct to say drive a carriage/coach (in case you're not a passenger)?
2) if we speak about a ship and you're a captain, do you drive a ship (or what verb should I say)?
Thank you :)
