Abbattere is usually used when speaking about trees, for instance “Mario abbatte l’albero” Mario is cutting the tree. Sfondare on the other hand means to make a dent/hole into something “Mario ha sfondato il muro” Mario made a dent into the wall. I would also like to point out that sfondare is a very strong word, so we are talking about big dents and holes. Hope it makes sense, I tired ahah.
