Question about English (US)
In which situations can I use / shouldnt I use dude in the sense of politeness. I already know it’s umformal. I tend to speak often unformal and relaxed in my native language (german). Sometimes even in business mettings.
I just love phrases like what’s up, dude
come one, dude,
etc.

@Cilazsun It really depends on you. If you like it, use it! I would recommend against using it in business meetings though. In most cases that would cross the line from informal to unprofessional. Also, avoid using it when referring to someone like your friend’s parent or a superior unless you know them well and they seem comfortable with it.
Side note: “unformal” should be “informal”.
Hope that helps!

If you are with friends you can use dude. Often if the friends are fun and weird too.
You can also say dude as an exclamation of disbelief without addressing someone in particular.
“dude! where’s my car?” - what the hell, where’s my car?
“cool, dude.” - ok, sounds good
or some people will say “duuuuude”
if something is really cool

you can use it in any informal situation. Dude is generally a universal way to address people that you are friendly with. If somone doesn't like it, normally they'll politely ask you to stop.

don’t use “dude” with your parents or authority figures. it’s impolite and they may think you are trying to disregard them.
