Question about Korean

Why is 네 pronounced ‘de’ instead of ‘ne’ when ‘ㄴ’ has the ‘n’ sound. I understand that romanization of Korean isn’t the best , but this particular letter, has the same sound as romanized ‘n’ I’m just confused, do letters sometimes loose their original sounds in some words like ‘a’ in ‘ball’?
