Question about Japanese
What exactly is a ”research student” at a university in Japan? I would like to do my Master’s degree in Japan for 2 years, but do I have to be a ”research student” first for 1 year? So I have to be in Japan for 3 years in total? Please help explain, I’m very confused how it works😂 Thank you🌸

It is vary by graduate schools. Some graduate schools request you to be a research student, and some don't request.

@sofialindgren Hi there. Don’t worry. Master degree is 2 years here.
“Research student”=(研究生:Kenkyusei) is a student who work on a specific topic or issue you have chosen to write a in-depth research paper using 2year period. The quality of the paper determine your eligibility to obtain the degree.
Whereas, there is a “course work Master” in which you attend classes to earn the credits.

@PotetoOishii Ohhh okay! Thank you so much for your response! So it’s not a requirement to be a 研究生 first before you start the actual Master’s program? You can just start the Master’s right away?

@sofialindgren Correct!! You can just start right away! It is not a prerequisite
but a style you do your course :)
There are a few people who became research student in a graduate school but do not receive a Mater degree because their purpose is a research itself not a degree.
Make sure to enroll to “Master degree course”!
