Question about English (UK)

What does "my daily driver" and "threw a pad" in this tweet mean?

It's the 'family wagon', not my daily driver. Needed to use it this morning to get parts for my car, which ironically has a frozen caliper.
The 'rust' is brake dust and grindings because it apparently threw a pad and has been grinding down the rotor. Sadly - no one told me.
