Question about China

I know the word for “hello” is 你好, I’ve also been to China but a lot of people I’ve met just say hello (In English, also sometimes they say 嗨) I also saw a video saying that 你好 isn’t very common and people prefer saying ”good morning” or asking if the other person has eaten yet. What do you guys think?

Also most of the people who said “hello” either know I’m American or are learning English themselves. I don’t know if they’re saying “hello” because they want to practice English or 你好 isn’t common or smth like that.
