Question about Korean

I am learning how to ask a person his or her occupation and to be able to answer the same question myself.

However I'm having trouble understanding when to add 이 or 가 at the end of the occupation when replying "I am not a ㅇㅇㅇ". From what I understand it depends on the ending of the word, but is it the last syllable or last character? Would someone be able to help me and clarify when to use 이 and 가?

Like in:
기자가 아니에요.

But what about:
학생
가수
회사윈
경찰
