VĂLI
= a gap / space (between things)
--
VĂLISSĂ
= between
(lit. "in the gap/space"; location between two other objects)

= Finland is (located) between Sweden and Russia.
Kirja on kahden muun kirjan vÀlissÀ.
= The book is between two other books.
--
VĂLIIN
= [to] between
(this indicates movement from one position to another)

= The boy went to sit [to] between his father and mother.
Laitan kirjan kahden muun kirjan vÀliin.
= I'll put the book [to] between two other books.
There is also a phrase "jÀttÀÀ vÀliin" which means "to skip/to pass"

â JĂ€tĂ€n tĂ€llĂ€ kertaa vĂ€liin.
= Do you want to go skiing?
â I'll pass this time.
--
VĂLILLĂ
= between
(to me this sounds like when you draw a line between two objects and just pick a spot anywhere on that line)
PysÀhdyimme kerran / kuusi kertaa vessaan Tampereen ja Helsingin vÀlillÀ.
= We stopped to pee once / six times between Tampere and Helsinki.

(here the "line" is time)
Ryhmittymien vÀlillÀ vallitsee aina kilpailutilanne.
= There is always a vying between the two groups.
(here the "line" is the relationship between the two groups. Because vying is not something that is physically located in some exact spot between the two groups, you use the external locative -llÀ)
Some more "vÀlillÀ sentences":

"VÀlillÀ" also means "occasionally"/"from time to time":
VÀlillÀ poika istuu isÀnsÀ ja ÀitinsÀ vÀlissÀ.
= Occasionally the boy sits between his father and mother.
--
(joideNkin) VĂLINEN
= between (some people/things)
(something that goes between these people/things)
NOTE: this is an adjective

(it's not physically located between you two, but is something no one else can meddle with)
Oriveden ja JyvÀskylÀn vÀlinen junaliikenne.
= The train traffic between Orivesi and JyvÀskylÀ.
Helsingin ja Oulun vÀlinen etÀisyys on noin 600 km.
= The distance between Oulu and Helsinki is about 600 km.
(you could also say "EtÀisyys Helsingin ja Oulun vÀlillÀ on noin 600 km" but the original sentence sounds more natural)
kansainvÀlinen
= international
(lit. between nations)
sukupuolten vÀlinen
= intersexual
(lit. between sexes)
mannertenvÀlinen
= intercontinental
(lit. between continents)

One small question: in the sentence "Poika meni istumaan isÀnsÀ ja ÀitinsÀ vÀliin", why is it ÀitinsÀ and not ÀidinsÀ?

Hmm, I hadn't thought of this, but it's true:
Àidin -> ÀitinsÀ
kodin -> kotinsa
I'm sorry I don't have a clear answer to this, but here are some formation rules to possessive suffixes, if these could help:
