Question about English (US)

She’s observed people, studied the research and noticed every little tic and habit that causes them to either stumble over themselves or to get the most out of a conversation.

What does “To stumble over oneself” mean?
Also does this expression “to get the most out of a conversation” mean “to distract the most of audiences’s attention from the conversation”?
