Question about English (UK)

What is the difference between I work as GP usually, but today am assisting my colleague in A&E and I am working as GP usually, but today I assist my colleague in A&E ?Feel free to just provide example sentences.

What sentence is correct?
“Usually” - means that it must be present simple in the beginning, but can we use “am assigning” without “I”?
