It's means to stand/place/set something/someone up
For example:
They set the pencils into a row
The teacher made him stand up(it's a little hard to translate into English)
She placed the stuff back
Note:there is another meaning of להעמיד
Put things in perspective/to set (the matter) straight
Point his mistake out
להעמיד על המקום can mean literally to place something in place or to make someone know his place
