Could you explain why this sentence has inversion? The sentence could be wrong by my mistake because I wrote down that sentence thru my poor listening skill.

<Because I thought my parents believed and they told me over and over again to the point were I believed that they didn’t exist.>

I don't get it , this part
to the point were I believed that they didn't exist.

Why is "the were verb" coming from?
Even if it is right, why it isn't "was verb"?
