Garbage is usually from the household. Or waste thrown into a bin or trash can. It is the same as trash. It is picked up by the city. There are garbage trucks.
Please take out the garbage on Monday night.
I found a bicycle in the garbage by the street.
The garbage truck just came by our house.
Put that old food in the garbage!
Throw your garbage in the trash cans.
That music is garbage!
Litter is when somebody throws trash or garbage somewhere other than a designated container. Throwing trash on the ground is littering. Litter is trash on the ground in a park or on the sidewalk. Litter is usually illegal. Also - There is not a litter truck!
Please donāt litter in the park.
For community service, we picked up litter by the river.
There is so much litter in the pond it is sad.
I wish people used an ashtray when they smoke cigarettes and didnāt litter.

There really is no difference. They can be used in the same situations.
However, garbage is used most commonly about bags of trash and litter is used most commonly for trash on the ground outside
