It's an example sentence from my textbook, but I feel like the sentencene needs in after "born".

That’s good! It would be better if you put “where” before “he”.
ex: “This is the place where he was born.”

Yeah it sounds natural and doesn’t need anything after born. You could also say this is the room he was born in, or town or hospital or whatever.
