Question about German

I am confused about the word Kunde as it appears in the word Erdkunde = geography. Die Kunde = tidings (lit.), Der Kunde = customer.

Kundig = knowledgeable, but Kunde alone doesn't seem to translate as knowledge (which would make sense Erdkunde = earth knowledge)

Can anyone enlighten me?
