IMO, kanjis are ideograms, which can show the meaning of a name. And also, using kanjis can distinguish one’s name from another’s. 🙂

Basically, in japan all of our Family names are written in Kanji (佐藤 田中 山田)
but about First name, some of them are written by 漢字 or 片仮名 or 平仮名(たけし ありさ めぐ)

漢字 has a certain meaning in it, so parents can put some meaning to first names.
For example, when we see the name 心美 (Kokomi), it's clear at a glance that her parents wished her to be a person with a beautiful (美) soul (心) (like a kind-hearted person) when she was born.
Names with same sound can mean different things depending on the 漢字 used.
When you use ひらがな or カタカナ, it just conveys the sound. Some people prefer them. IMHO, they, especially ひらがな, has a sort of innocence or neutral quality to it. I personally like those names. Also, to me, ひらがな names look so Japanese perhaps because I subconciously connect them to the era when people only used ひらがな. It was when Kyoto was the capital of Japan and most of the famous shrines there were built.
