Question about German

Hi, there is a sentence I saw that is confusing to me:
"Mir läuft die Zeit davon"
Supposedly, it translates to "I'm running out of time" or the more literal "Time is running away from me".
My problem is with the word "davon" since I don't understand its function in the sentence or what is the da standing for. The meaning would be the same if I replaced de "davon" with "weg"?
I don't know, it would be nice if you could give me a detailed answer so I can have some much needed insight on the works of these damnable da words.
