Question about English (US)

What does "Our lives may not have been lived out in rural Japan" mean?

The nostalgia evoked by the series has nothing to do with the setting. It presents a dilemma that is nearly universal for children: there’s nothing to do and we’re bored! Our lives may not have been lived out in rural Japan, but the childhood experiences depicted by Non Non Biyori are universally relatable.
