What does Capodanno refer to exactly? and what does anno nuovo refer to? is Capodanno only the 1st January but anno nuovo the whole year? How do you translate "Happy New Year" then?

“Capodanno” is the 1st January, the first day of the new year. (You can also see that the word is made of Capo + d’anno)
“Anno nuovo” literally means “New year” so basically every year it is a new year.
The translation of “Happy New Year” is “Felice anno nuovo”.

"Capodanno" is the first day of the new year. (1st January)
"Anno nuovo" means the whole year, sure. (2021 for example)
Happy New Year = Felice anno nuovo/ Auguri di buon anno
