Question about English (US)

I have a question about the following sentence:

" #BREAKING: Destruction is being reported in Philadelphia after police shoot and kill a man on Monday afternoon."

Why didn't we use "After police SHOT and KILLED"

It would have been logical for me to use the past tense here, why isn't it the case ?

Thanks !!
