it's not entirely correct. Uno/lo are used in front of words beginning with s + a consonant, gn, z, ps, but not in front of any combination of consonants. See, for instance, un cratere/un drone/un prete/un brodo/un flop. It's also not true that uno and lo should be used in front of vowels: un amico, un uomo, un esempio.

ho sempre ripetuto questo concetto, non pensando mai che in realtà fosse sbagliato!
Il singolare lo e il plurale gli si usano davanti a parole che cominciano con i vocale o semiconsonante (lo iato), con gn (lo gnomo), con s + consonante diversa da l o r (lo stupido), con sc (lo sci), con x, y, z (xilofono, yogurt, zucchero) e con i gruppi pn (lo pneumatico) e ps (lo psicologo), quindi non si usano con pr (prato) cr (crodino) gl (glicine)....
