Question about United States
I think it's right for American families to force an 18-year-old child out of the family home to become more independent, but wouldn't parents allow their children to return to the family home, even at the risk of starving to death from job loss due to the current coronavirus epidemic?

Depends on the relationship the child maintains with their parents.
Many children come back to their parent's house there's even a name for it, boomerang generation.
A boomerang is a throwing toy that comes back to you after you throw it.
If you made your parent's lives hard only God knows what to expect if you try to come back.
