Question about English (US)

Do you native speakers say "My name is ~" for self-introduction?

I read a book saying that this phrase is an ancient word, strange and funny.
Also, some Japanese people believe "I'm ~" is only correct while "My name is ~" is incorrect.

I'd like to know the truth.
