Example for inside:
He was inside the house throughout the weekend.
My pet Cat named Louie Loves playing inside with his ball

The evidence was taken in by the officials
Example for outside:
Louie hates playing outside when it snows.
The dogs love to play outside when the sun shined

Out is informal, while outside is more formal. Same with in and inside.
but, there is one difference where items are most commonly used to say that its position to a container. ( the pencil is out of its box) (the pencil is in its box)
You use outside / inside for people and animals ( most of the time )
for many animals, if they dont have names, or you are not familiar to, you say "it" with in or out, but if with a "He" or "she", you use the larger word.
it is very complicated, but it is easy in this way:
Humans, animals whoose names or genders you know, ( outside or Inside )
Animals or items ( out or in )
there are many exceptions though.
