It really depends on the context. Probably the closest synonym is "frightening," but there are many other words that have similar but not exactly the same meaning or usage. If you take a look at this list you'll see many of these. "Ghastly" and "redoubtable" are some of the more "high-level" words on this list...but they don't mean *exactly* the same thing. When we move past the more basic vocabulary for the more advanced we run into this problem, where words have narrower, more specific meanings.
