I don't really understand what "a third off" means. Can you help me?
- English (US)
@andyss61 Imagine breaking a pencil into three pieces exactly the same length. Each piece is one third of the pencil. Written as a fraction it's 1/3 one piece of three. You can't divide 100 by 3 evenly. You get 33.33333, an endless number of threes. So we round down to 33%

@COASTBC so, this is the solution. 72 : 3 = 24. 72 - 24 = 48. in the case with 6 bottles that would be 6 × 48 = 2.88. The part I don't understand is 72 - 24 = 48. Why would we even do this? And isn't it 72 each?

@andyss61 Ok one more time. Break a pencil in to 3 even pieces. Take one of them away or one third away. You have two thirds remaining. The sale is one third off of the original price. Once we know the percentage of one third, then we need to figure out how much two thirds is. Because two third is the price you are going to pay. 33×3 =99. that is as close as we can get to 100, in order to give us a percentage. 72× .33 = 23.76. That is one third. You're not paying one third, you're pay two thirds.
Your math is using 30% 30×3= 90, not 99

@COASTBC ok. I understood how to do it and my mistake but I don't understand your solution. Why are you doing 33×3 =99, and what is 30% 30×3 90, 99?

@COASTBC Yeah, I understood it. But what does "Your math is using 30% 30×3= 90, not 99" mean?

@andyss61 Google basic fractions. I'm done explaining this. You have the numbers you need for your original question.
