When an American eats with a fork, they hold the fork in their left hand and use it to hold the meat (or any food) while they cut it with a knife in their right hand. Then they change the fork to their right hand and use it to lift a bit of meat to their mouth.
When a Briton eats with a fork, they hold the fork in their left hand to cut the meat and to lift the meat to their mouth. They don't change the fork to their other hand.
