"Another" is short for "An other", and it's used to make "other" into a noun. "Other" on its own is an adjective.
"I want to buy another pair of shoes, because my other shoes are all getting old."
"Give me another."
"The other houses are all more expensive."
"I would another, please."
You can also use "another" as an adjective when you would use the article "an" before a noun being described with "other".
"They gave us another (an other; one other) option, but it's not as good."
