In what context?
If you talk about a particular game, then yes, you will hear
"Play Ball!" at the beginning of a baseball game.
Or you might say
"Do you want to play a game? Let's play Scrabble."
But I have never heard "play game"
I can't say no one has ever said it, but if they did, they said it wrong.
